GM 1 Toronto Maple Leafs @ Winnipeg Jets
After jumping from 69 to 95 points and back into the postseason; Toronto has to feel ready to make a deep run in the playoffs with this large group of experienced sophomores. Patrick Marleau was a seemingly small move since although he is a seven time 30+goal scorer, he hasn't seen a 30 goal season 2013-2014. He did not look like a 38 year old playing with kids. His first game in a Leafs sweater saw two goals on five shots, 14:41 T.O.I with 2:06 PP time and 2:44 PK time, he was doing it all. Just about everyone was for Toronto in this 7-2 slaughter. Freddie Andersen had a shutout through 50 minutes and won the game for the Leafs in the first period. Winnipeg flew out of the gate and had the first three powerplays of the game. Andersen was the best penalty killer and fought off a relentless push for the opening 15 minutes which paid off as his Leafs netted three goals in the final five minutes of the opening period. Toronto will have to learn some discipline, they can't be giving opponents eight chances on the power play a game. The PK unit looked strong as they successfully killed off all eight PPs although they did allow 18 shots on goal. Andersen had a quietly solid campaign last year (33-16-14 / .918 save% / 2.67 GAA / career-high 4 shutouts) If he can stay healthy and the Leafs can help him out more in the penalty department, Toronto will be a powerhouse this year.
Fantasy spin- Ross got EIGHT blocks by Zaitsev, but that was only seven less than Steve Mason provided as his fantasy season began with a -2 mark in net. His opponent, Calista, had Mason's backup who came in long enough to toss her a -.2 as well. Matthews scored her 7.5 points which was only the 4th highest scorer on the night as Kadri put up 8 points for Mitch, JVR 10 pts for Ryan, and Andersen (14th drafted goalie) kicked off Kevin's season with a 10 point performance.
GM 2 St. Louis Blues @ Pittsburgh Penguins
No stranger to long stints on the IR, Kris Letang returned to action for the Pens for the first time since Feb. 21st. He had a shaky return as he led all Pittsburgh d-men in T.O.I (4:30 more than the next highest) but he had five giveaways, no points, and a -2 rating which could have easily been -3 if Brayden Schenn didn't have a brain fart that gave the Pens a late 5-on-3 advantage which they will take advantage of almost every time. Letang pushed one over to Malkin who slapped it on net before Guentzal poked at it and Crosby finally buried a powerplay goal with 6:14 left in the third period to cut the Blues lead in half, 4-3. That goal had to release some tension as last year's 3rd best PP unit were being shut down by last year's 3rd best PK team. The Penguins did not experiment much with personnel either as Crosby-Malkin-Kessel-Guentzal ate up 5:39 of their 6:19 powerplay time. With only 3 total shots on goal the Penguins felt the absence of their powerful net front Swede Patric Hornqvist. Jake Allen wanted nothing to do with standing in his net for the final 10 minutes as he gifted Kessel an open net that he missed and the Pens final two goals were into practically open nets. 2nd year Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo netted similar goals to break the 2-2 tie in the 2nd period and the 4-4 tie in overtime to win the game for St. Louis, 5-4. Though the Blues left Pittsburgh with a 5-4 victory; Pittsburgh raised their 5th Stanley Cup banner since entering the league in 1967 while St. Louis Blues still have zero of those and also entered the league in 1967.
Fantasy spin- Todd only had two skaters in action tonight, but the Pietrangelo/Sheary combo scored him 12 points. Austin's 4th overall selection Sidney Crosby looked srong, putting up 9 points. Which was 7.2 points more than 2nd overall pick, Matt Murray, provided.
GM 3 Calgary Flames @ Edmonton Oilers
Several changes for Calgary since last season, but their inability to take down Edmonton has poured over from last year. Cam Talbot notched the first shutout of the season stopping all 26 shots. I feel like Mike Smith was easily Calgary's best player, but no one stood out much offensively. Smith saved 39-41 shots and the box score says McDavid had 7 shots on goal, but watching it I felt like he had at least a dozen shots. Smith played fantastic, but McDavid played better. That should be a common theme this season. That Smith-Lack tandem is more than suffice for any team. If Calgary misses the playoffs again it likely won't be due to their goaltending. Johnny Gaudreau??? Where the hell were ya? Over 18 minutes on the ice and zero shots on goal? What was that 40 million dollar contract for? Travis Hamonic bitched for what felt like years to leave the Islanders. Solid -3 rating in his debut for Calgary. But at least he's happy.
Fantasy spin- Of course highlighted is Jake's 14 point night by McDavid and Cam Talbot getting Michael 13.2 points.
Spoilers: That wasn't Michael's best performer of the day. Chris scored 6.4 (only .4 less than Jake Allen scrounged up with his OTL) in a losing effort from Mike Smith. Nothing wrong with that. One person that stood out was Ryan's d-man Oscar Klefbom. He only scored .5 pts but NINE shots on goal? That's silly. He keeps pulling the trigger like that and he'll be a baby faced Burns. And of course, Jon needs to talk to Johnny. Tell him to shoot. 30 goals two years ago, 18 last year... He's starting to play like his height.
GM 4 Philadelphia Flyers @ San Jose Sharks
San Jose gave away their home opener quite literally as they had the most giveaways of any team today with 20. Both teams finished in the lower half last year in the penalty kill department and they both struggled again today. 5 of the 8 goals came via the powerplay as they combined for a pathetic 54% penalty kill. With about three minutes left in the 2nd period in a 2-2 tie it seemed like Wayne Simmonds decided to close the game out. Sure, McDavid had a hat trick tonight- in 7 shots. Simmonds registered three shots on goal and made all three. He will score 150 this year during Philly's 82-0-0 season, if you ask the average Flyers fan. But seriously, very impressive performance by Simmonds and Voracek/Gostisbehere tallied hat tricks of assists. Brian Elliott didn't look bad in his Flyers debut. Stopped 24/25 even strength goals and the PP goals weren't entirely his fault.
Fantasy spin- Michael had to sleep well after watching his Flyers win and the two Flyers he drafted combine for 27 points. Simmonds 18 and his mascot Ghost-Bear 9, living up to the hype. Elliott scored 8.4 for Todd to end his extremely efficient day totaling 20.4 with only 3 active players. Austin also gathered 14 pts in this game led by 8 with Voracek and 3 by both Thornton and Giroux. Free agent of the day came out of this game as Kevin Lebanc put up 10 points with his pair of goals and hat trick of penalties.

GM 5 Nashville Predators @ Boston Bruins
Boston had a strong showing in front of their home crowd and really controlled the play the entire opening period. Their projected top scorer, David Pastrnak, powered home a powerplay goal off of promising rookie Charlie McAvoy's pass. With ten seconds to go in the first, Arvidsson snuck one by Tukka Rask and sent the Predators into the locker room with a tie that they probably didn't deserve. The second period saw two NHL first goals by Charlie McAvoy and Jake DeBrusk. The way Rask was in net- that 3-1 lead seemed like it would be enough. On the powerplay with three minutes to go in the game, Nashvilled pulled their goalie to open the door for Brad Marchand to shoot a shorthanded goal from his side of the ice into an empty net. And it's a good thing he did because after drawing another penalty Nashville entered a 5-on-3 which they scored twice on. Boston held on for a 4-3 win.
Fantasy spin- Chris benfited from his trio of Bruins, who is probably his second favorite team. On Boston's opening goal Chris scored 10 points with each of his bruins contributing. Kreji-McAvoy-Pasta. Krejci had 3 assists and the trio scored 20.5 of Chris's 22.9 pts on the day. Rask should have put up more than 7.2 for Ryan, his team put him in a tough spot late by taking stupid penalties. Arvidsson and Johansen scored Ross 12.5.
GM 6 Montreal Canadiens @ Buffalo Sabres
Carey Price was the first player drafted in our league and he brought his A-game to the season opener. Back in Buffalo, Jason Pominville did something he struggled with since leaving Buffalo for Minnesota, receive a pass and put it in the net. If it wasn't for Ryan O'Reilly's intoxicated pass in his own zone that Max Pacioretty took advantage of, Buffalo would have went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Pominville, again, caught a perfect pass from Eichel thirty seconds into the 2nd period and put it home.
"The Pominville population is just erupting!" Sloppy play let in a shorthanded goal to tie the game up with 12 to go and then neither goalie allowed another goal. Jonathan Douin undressed Lehner in the shootout for the lone shootout goal. Buffalo Sabres seemed like the superior team for the majority of the game and it should be a great season in Buffalo. Price bailed the Habs out tonight.
Fantasy spin- 43-45 saves for Carey Price gave Dave 11.6pts and Robin Lehner with 38-40 saves to score me 6.6pts. The goalies were the best two on the ice in this game. Pominville is flying early back in Buffalo, getting Austin 7.5 pts. Danault's SHG scored 5 for Jon. Crickets for everyone else.
GM 7 Colorado Avalanche @ New York Rangers
This was another game with 10+ powerplays as the league has seemed to crack down on everything entertaining about the sport. I don't think any Avalanche player has been talked about more than Matt Duchene lately about his going on year long constant trade rumors. He didn't let that effect his game though as he buried the first goal of Colorado's season. The man who set the play up hasn't been talked about since entering the league it seems, Nail Yakupov. The two best players in Colorado in my opinion connected later in the first on the powerplay- Mackinnon to Rantanen. As time ran out in the first, Mika Zibanejad scored two powerplay goals to even the score. His first came after a chaotic scramble and resulted in an open net, off a Shattenkirk pass to give him his first NYR point. The second came after Mika failed to set up a teammate so he just fired it home with two seconds to spare. Semyon Varlamov was having no more of that though and the Avalanche shut New York down, winning 4-2. Varlamov hasn't played since December. It wasn't long ago since he put up great stats on the ice and in the courtroom.
Fantasy spin- Varlamov was the only starting goalie to go undrafted. Josh picked him up as he had no goalie missing the draft, but so far it worked out- scored 10.4. Tyson Barrie scored Reece 6.5. Zibanejad had 8 points for Dave. Aaaand... That's about it. King Henrik got Chris 1.4. If he's a king...but I've said that for years.
GM 8 Washington Capitals @ Ottawa Senators
Two Eastern powerhouses wanted to get a good start to the campaign after both being eliminated early this year by the eventual champions. Ottawa was without their captain Erik Karlsson and it showed as they struggled to clear the puck at times. Heading into the 3rd Ottawa held a 2-1 before Washington's Niskanen sent a crisp pass directly to Bobby Ryan, but don't worry Caps fans- Niskanen went on to stand still and allow Brassard to have a wide open backdoor goal. Game one laziness. Two minutes later Kuznetsov snuck in to steal a poor pass from Ceci and laced a pass over to the faceoff circle that should just have a giant 8 painted on it in every arena. Ceci knew he screwed the pooch and almost snapped his twig on the crossbar. Kuznetsov feed Ovechkin for another goal eighty seconds later to tie things back up. Once Stone gave the Senators a 4-3 later in the period Ovechkin took his place in his face-off circle and rocketed a 3rd goal to complete the third hat trick of the 2 day old season and to push the game to overtime. Boring OT surprisingly, but Capitals took care of business even though God's gift to shootouts, TJ Oshie, didn't convert.
Fantasy spin- Ray got yet another 14.5 from Ovechkin. Although it is not a keeper league he has owned Ovi for 3 straight years. Holtby went off the board 3rd for goalies, but only managed 6.6 points for Todd. After not being cleared until last night, Derick Brassard factored into 3 of the Ottawa 4 goals, getting Jon 7 points. I was going to say a free agent to look out for, but Jakub Vrana's 17:16 T.O.I largely with Ovi and Kuz was enough proof that the Czech sophomore could have a strong season and I dropped Vatrano from Bastan for him.
GM 9 Minnesota Wild @ Detroit Red Wings
It was apparent that the first goal in Detroit's new barn had to be scored by the Wings as Minnesota's two first period goals were both disallowed. And that's my ignorant, bias fan comment of the matchup. Dubnyk did have an early bid at save of the year with his snowman backhand swat.The story of this game was the powerplay. Minnesota was gifted a 5-on-3 in the second period and showed off their classic Wild skills. Koivu missing a wide open net and the blue liners passed their shots into the PK'ers skates. Classic. Detroit soon after was given a very similar 5-on-3 and like any five guys with minimal skill- they buried two quick goals. Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha are the two young bright spots on this rebuilding Red Wings roster so it was a great sign to see them notch the first two goals of the season. When Joel Eriksson Ek netted a goal two minutes into the third the three scorers combined for 64 years old. After setting Ek up, Chris Stewart scored his own goal 40 seconds later. 2-2, which only lasted 5 minutes before always reliable, Hammerin Hank Zetterburg scored and Wings went on to win 4-2.
Fantasy spin- Wings D-man Mike Green assisted on all four goals, scoring Michael 11.5 points. Mitch's home team goalie, Jimmy Howard scored 10.4 pts as he looks strong, similar to last season before his most recent injury.
Spoilers: Howard was not Mitch's best goalie tonight. Anthony Mantha scored me 9 pts though I'd trade those pts in for a different outcome.
GM 10 Pittsburgh Penguin (0-0-1) @ Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago went 0-6 on the powerplay which is pretty surprising. It is especially surprising when they scored TEN goals. After letting in four goals in three minutes, Penguins fans probably were not flocking to purchase new backup goalie, Antti Niemi, jerseys. In Niemi's lacking defence: Kane had a sneaky backhand pass to give Hartman an open net goal, Saad tapped a rebound goal in after Niemi stopped a 2-on-1 break, Kane tossed a pass 5 mph through three Penguins for a tap in backdoor goal for Schmaltz and Saad's second goal, well that was on Niemi. Nonetheless, less than 24 hours after leaving the ice after giving up an OT winner, Matt Murray came onto the ice. After holding the fort down for six minutes, Patrick Sharp joined the homecoming party with a goal. Phil Kessel got his first of the season from a Malkin-Crosby tic tac toe play with a 5-on-3 advantage. Chicago kept the pedal down and put up 5 more goals to win 10-1. It seemed like Chicago was trying to compensate for their 3 goal showing in the 4 game sweep last April to Nashville. It was an impressive showing. Aside from the powerplay goal, Crawford stood tall in net, stopping all 24 even strength goals and 28 of the 29 total shots. It was a completely dominant game.
Fantasy spin- Crawford scored Kevin 9.6, close to a 13.8pt shutout. Five Hawks had 3 or more points. Two of which are also on Kevin's team. Hartman and Kane both had a goal and Hartman tallied four assists, Kane had three. That duo, Crawford, and Keith netted Kevin 32.1 points. Reece had the highest scoring Hawk as Saad's hat trick scored him 14.5 points. Austin scored 8 points from Schmaltz and Panik. Basically- it was a good day to own any Chicago players.
GM 11 Arizona Coyotes @ Anaheim Ducks
With Vatanen and Lindholm sidelined and Theodore moved to Vegas, Anaheim's defense seemed very uncertain heading into this season. Getzlaf, Kesler, and Eaves were all out with injuries as well. That is 7 of the Ducks probably...top 12-14 players all sidelined. With this terrible setback, Arizona were not much underdogs. After a scrutinized season last year, Anthony Duclair opened the scoring with his 7th career goal against the Ducks in only 9 games followed by yet another promising Arizona rookie, Clayton Keller. Less than a minute later Corey Perry ripped his first goal of the night, on the Duck's 3rd shot, by Domingue, who received the start as off-season addition Antti Raanta wasn't quite ready to go. The Ducks killed their first two penalties, but Max Domi broke through in the 2nd off a fat rebound to extend the Coyotes lead, 3-1. Later in the second Perry bumped into Domingue, taking a goalie interference call which led to John Gibson receiving a game misconduct as he tried to pick a goalie fight with Domingue. Personally, I think Domingue should have received a penalty for denying us all a rare goalie fight. After Arizona converted on their PP it seemed like a wrap. 4-1 lead. Scorey Perry slammed his second goal in from about 1ft away and sat on the ice chatting with Domingue. Perhaps Perry was letting Domingue know that he's about to get lit up, because that'd be true. 31 seconds later Kase scored, making it a 4-3 game with more than a period to go. With 9 minutes left Gibson made the least graceful move, falling down and letting the puck go between his legs, but the pipe bailed him out. Rakell's strong forecheck forced a turnover that ended up tying the game from Vermette's stick. Rakell was rewarded with a goal after his night of hard work in the dirty areas. Ducks win 5-4. My favorite game of the day to watch, very exciting stuff.
Fantasy spin- Although he only netted Ryan 6.2 pts, John Gibson looked strong in net, just a few unfortunate breaks. Arizona's leading scorer came from the blue line as Alex Goligoski got a hat trick of assists, 9 points for Josh. Three points all around for the Duck's top line with Perry for Jake (2 goals, 1 assist) Rakell for me (1 goal, 2 assists) and Cogliano for the free agency (1 goal, 2 assists). Cogliano would be a great pick up for a temporary top liner, but with 3 skaters who saw more time than him sidelined, it's likely that his fix on the top line is not permanant. Clayton Keller looked really strong for Ross.
GM 12 Philadelphia Flyers (1-0-0) @ Los Angeles Kings
Philadelphia joined their buddies in Pittsburgh by taking an L on the second night of a back-to-back. Michael Neuvirth added his bid to save of the year late in the first as he absolutely robbed Kopitar. After 20 minutes it was an excellent goalie duel. Neuvirth ended the goalie duel as he only got a piece of the one timer off Trevor Lewis's stick. Tyler Toffoli out positioned Filppula with three minutes to go and punched in a second LAK goal that Neuvirth couldn't really do much with. Kings won 2-0 in what was a great goalie duel. Quick stopped all 35 Flyers shots as he collected his 45th shutout. Neuvirth stopped 25-27. Although the Flyers lost, their offense was rolling for consecutive nights, just weren't getting any puck luck. They have to be happy with their goalie tandem so far. Neuvirth was the better goalie last year and Brian Elliott seems like an upgrade over that guy in Winnipeg now. Both teams combined for 10/10 on the penalty kill, both goalies stopping eight pp shots each.
Fantasy spin- Mitch got 15 points from Quick's shutout which he needs more of as he is up against the hottest team in the league so far. Speaking of Michael, Neuvirth is on his team, only getting 3 pts, but a strong effort. The only skater with more than three fantasy points was Trevor Lewis who scored 5 points for....free agency. Tyler Toffoli fired a game high 7 shots on goal. Valtteri Filppula now has consecutive games with more than 15 minutes of T.O.I, more than 18 in this game. That's a lot of minutes to keep throwing up zeroes. He, like Lewis is in the free agency.

GM 13 New York Islanders @ Columbus Blue Jackets
Finally a game without 10+ powerplays. Columbus didn't need an advantage to get goals though as New York Islanders were stuck in preseason, perhaps offseason mode. Thomas Greiss only barely eclipsed the halfway mark in the game after allowing 5 goals. They weren't all Greiss's fault; New York's d-men were...Horrible. De Haan gave away the first two goals. I would say they missed Hamonic, but he sucked in Calgary, too. The Panarin-Saad trade was probably the biggest one of the off-season and Panarin showed off his hands with three assists to show how both Columbus and Chicago will benefit from the trade. Bobrovsky wasn't too busy though he had to make a few quality saves to earn his 29 save shutout.
Fantasy spin- Todd got 7 points from Panarin topped only by Ross's 13.8pt shutout.
Spoilers: Not Ross's only goalie win of the quiet night. Columbus's 6 d-men all played with 17 and 21 minutes, no leader though Werenski and Jones were the only two to see PP time, Werenski netted a goal and 4.5 pts for Kevin. I thought I'd have a good scoop on a free agent who looked strong for the Islanders, but of course the lone Isles fan in the league, Calista owns Mathew Barzal. Isles need to suit up Ryan Pulock because A) their D sucked tonight and B) he was my last draft pick. Milano and Dubois netted their first NHL goals, neat.
GM 14 Florida Panthers @ Tampa Bay Lightning
It's decently common for a team to absolutely dominate the play and head into the locker room behind. That's exactly what Florida did tonight. They jumped all over Tampa Bay and had a 17-9 shot advantage before Ondrej Palat scored a very soft goal. 25 seconds into the second period Roberto Luongo let in yet another soft goal, softest goal of the early season. Luongo completely crushed the momentum for his team. Connor Brickley and Mark Pysyk broke the seal for the Panthers and it was 2-2 after 2. It only took a minute into the third for fully healed Steven Stamkos to find Namestikov on the powerplay. Kucherov, fresh off his surprising 40 goal season, netted his first of the year. Bolts went on to win 5-3.
Fantasy spin- Luongo's poor play scored Jon an even 0 pts. Dadonov was one of the most intriguing players heading into the season and he looked decent also for Jon. 18:33 T.O.I 4:33 of PP time and one assist, but was on the ice for three Tampa Bay goals. Luckily for him, +/- is not scored in this league. Brayden Point scored 7.5 for Austin, and Palat added 6.5 more for Austin. Ross got another goalie win on the night which is massive, 2 wins in only 3 games played. 8.6 for Vasilevskiy's efforts.
GM 15 Vegas Golden Knights @ Dallas Stars
Vegas are the only undefeated franchise. Thanks to Marc-Andre Fleury. And James Neal. The two 'big' players that packed their bags for Vegas paid off for the Golden Knights. Early on and most of the game- Vegas sucked. Fleury was standing on his head just constantly under fire, but looking strong. NHL handed their newest team 7 powerplays and they capitalized on none of them. Hell, hey didn't register a shot on every PP. Tyler Seguin finally beat MAF in the 2nd period on a powerplay and that seemed to be the story of the game. Fleury as sharp as ever, but he is in Vegas so it will be to no avail. The changing point was Ben Bishop making his 19th save of the night with his face. The puck either found its way through his mask or broke the mask, but 44 minutes into his shutout, Bishop left the game to get stitches over his left eye. Kari Lehtenon entered the game and soon let in a long goal from Neal off of a friendly body. Neal beat him late in the game again and just like that- Vegas escape with a win.
Fantasy spin- Mattias Janmark, free agent, logged 18:09 T.O.I, but that may be a fluke as over 5 minutes of that was on the PK. Granted, it seems 6+ PKs per game may be the new norm. Cody Eakin logged 22 minutes tonight and looks like he will be a big piece in Vegas. Not sure if he will remain a free agent for long. Brenden Leipsic also a FA logged over 15 minutes plus 6+ minutes on the powerplay. Not sure how much stock should be put into the first game. Fleury and Neal combined for 20.5 points for Ray and launched him into a lead over me. The lone goal scorer for Dallas was Seguin, for me. Another day in the books.

GM 16 Colorado Avalanche (1-0-0) @ New Jersey Devils
Today is the final day for teams to make their debut as New Jersey was one of three teams to sit around all week watching hockey. Both netminders looked strong in this game stopping 40 and 35 shots. Bernier had thee save of the early season with an excellent snag to deny Severson. All in a losing effort. This game was all about special teams which will likely be a common theme as there were double digit powerplays again. Me bitching about how many penalties are being called will definitely be a common theme. Colorado fired nine shots, but no goals on their 6 PP tries. As if laying a special team goose egg wasn't bad enough, Avalanche let in a shorthanded goal in the third. That SHG was the icing on the Devils 4-1 as their PP lit it up going 3 for 4. This is the Avalanche team we all expected to see.
Fantasy spin- Austin had to wait awhile to get his first start from Schneider, but well worth the wait as the 40-41 win netted Austin 12 points. Rookie Will Butcher scored Ross 9 pts with three powerplay assists, but with only 12:45 T.O.I it may be a fluke. Butcher was one of only two d-men to partake in the PP. 19 yr old Swede saw top 4 minutes and sniped a PPG and set John Moore up for a shorthanded goal. Bratt is one of those rookies who the folks at ESPN fail to list in the free agency although they will throw in ten year retired players. When ESPN acknowledges Bratt he will likely be scooped up. The Calder race should be interesting this year as there is no obvious winner heading into the season, but a lot of promising rookies. #1 overall pick Nico Hischier failed to tally a point, but had six shots on goal and won't be kept quiet for long.
GM 17 New York Rangers (0-1-0) @ Toronto Maple Leafs (1-0-0)
Henrik Lundqvist sucked in the season opener. He sucked again tonight letting in 5 first period goals by ex-Ranger Dominic Moore, Jake Gardiner, Nikita Zaitsev and a pair by Zach Hyman. Already confirmed starter for Sunday, Ondrej Pavelec entered the game after twenty minutes and posted a shutout period, making 11 saves. The Rangers posted three goals in the second and the third period began at a 5-5 tie. Mats Zuccarello was all over the ice for NYR as he factored into 4 of the first 5 goals (1g 3a). Pavelec could not stay perfect, Tyler Bozak broke the tie seven minutes into the third to give the Leafs their third lead of the game. Leafs powered home to win 8-5.
Fantasy Spin- Goalies did not earn much in this game, but anyone owning a Leaf likely got a lil somthin. 13 of the 18 Toronto skaters got a point tonight and six different skaters notched two points. The only multi goal scorer was Zach Hyman as he scored me 6.5pts. Dave had 5 skaters in this game that gave him 17.5 points to help his attempt at a comeback. Jimmy Vesey has yet to register Reece a point through two games but he is logging top 3 minutes alongside Zuccarello and Kreider. Reece also has Zuc and he posted 12 points as the high scorer of the game. Just a matter of time until Vesey starts factoring in to the score sheet.
GM 18 Detroit Red Wings (1-0-0) @ Ottawa Senators (0-0-1)
Unlike the game above, this was a genuine goalie duel. Neither goaltender was under an immense amount of fire, but through 40 minutes both goalies were perfect. 24 saves for Craig Anderson and 25 for Jimmy Howard. Like every other game this year, there were double digit powerplays as the teams combined for 10/10 on the PK. As the game went on the suspense built as to who was finally going to crack the seal. With only 2:34 left on the clock the collective shutout ended. Martin Frk found the back of the elusive net on Detroit's 28th shot of the game. Derick Brassard thought his goalie deserved more than a 0-1 loss, and got the Senators on the board thirty seconds later. This duel rightfully went to the shootout and only one goal found the net. Frans Nielson won it for Detroit.
Fantasy Spin- Craig Anderson got Dave 5.8 in a losing effort and Mitch received another double digit (11.4) effort from Jimmy Howard this week. These goalies were the first two stars in the game. Tatar and Zetterburg were out there for over a third of the game and combined for 8 shots on goal, but Martin Frk registered his 2nd goal, 3rd point for the free agency.
GM 19 Tampa Bay Lightning (1-0-0) @ Florida Panthers (0-1-0)
The second meeting in consecutive nights picked up where the last game left off. Florida dominating the pace, out shooting Tampa Bay 24-8 after 1 period, but trailing 2-1 off of horrible goaltending. Evgenii Dadonov notched his first NHL goal late in the first and then Nick Bjugstad tied it up early in the second. Reimer let the Bolts back in the driver's seat and after two TB led 3-2 though they trailed FORTY to 15 in shots. It must be frustrating as hell to be a Panthers fan right now. 6 minutes into the third Colton Scevior tied it back up and forty seconds later James McCann finally gave the Panthers the lead. Finally the hard work pays off for Florida, it seemed. Panthers win 5-4.
Fantasy spin- Nine goals by nine different players. Josh's duo of Huberdeau and Trocheck provided him 9.5 points. Reimer only provided 6.2 for his poor effort, but win for Chris. Josh also scored 8 points from Kucherov as his ex-Florida residency is showing. Palat/Point gave Ryan 8.5 points.
GM 20 Buffalo Sabres (0-0-1) @ New York Islanders (0-1-0)
Trailing 1-0 in the second, Buffalo seemed to be on the cusp of tying the game on the powerplay. But after sloppy play led to back-to-back shorthanded goals and then an even strength goal all within three minutes, Sabres were looking up at a 4-0 deficit and a new goalie in net. Halak was holding down the net to perfection until Evander Kane pushed through back-to-back shorthanded goals of his own and through two periods this game saw FOUR shorthanded goals. Islanders went on to win 6-3.
Fantasy spin- Mitch scored 10 points from John Tavares, but Mitch's opponent Michael received a little more (13) from Evander Kane. Kane had eight shots on goal, too as he was trying to summon the puny annoying version of his last name. 7.2 win for Halak and Austin.
GM 21 Nashville Predators (0-1-0) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (0-1-1)
A rematch of the Stanley Cup sounds good on paper, but Nashville played a goon game and never had a chance. Cody McLeod, one of the top 5 jackasses in the league was enjoying himself until fellow jackass Ryan Reaves knocked him around. Reaves out there fighting for a cup that isn't his. 82 penalty minutes and only 60 shots on goal, none of which went behind Matt Murray. 4-0 shutout to finally give the reigning champs their first win of the season. Not sure if Nashville accomplished what they set out to do, but they receive another loss to the Penguins. At least they still have their catfish.
Fantasy spin- Murray with a 13.2 shutout for Reece. Penalty minutes are scored so several goons would have been money in this one. Most every goon is in the free agency though. Reeves with 15 pts, McLeod 8.5 pts, Hartnell 8 pts for Ryan, all trash players. Crosby (Austin) Rust (Ross) Maata (Josh) were the only multi-point scoring.
GM 22 Montreal Canadiens (1-0-0) @ Washington Capitals (1-0-0)
Alexander the Gr8 has the best start to a season in his historic career. He followed his opening night hat trick up with a first period hat trick. Washington took a 4-0 lead into the locker room. Carey Price did not return to the net. Right when it looked like the Capitals were going to add another on the powerplay Brandon Gallagher converted on a shorthanded goal, but Holtby and the Capitals are too good to flounder that lead. They went on to when in commanding fashion, 6-1.
Fantasy spin- Alex Ovechkin is destroying my team this week. Back to back hat tricks for Ray, plus a fourth goal in this one, 18 points. Kuznetsov had an assist on each of the 4 goals, 9.5 pts for Mitch. Holtby earned Todd 11.6. #1 Overall draft pick Carey Price paid off for Dave with a -2 performance.
GM 23 Minnesota Wild (0-1-0) @ Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina controlled the pace for the majority of the opening period, outshooting Minnesota but thanks to solid netminding by backup Alex Stalock- Minnesota scored the first goal on the powerplay by Jason Zucker. Five minutes later Joakim Nordstrom knotted it up, but five minutes later Chris Stewart converted on a breakaway. Minnesota strung together four minor penalties that Justin Williams almost scored on (on his homecoming debut), but Stalock made his best save of the night to keep Minnesota up 3-1. The pressure was too much and soon after Derek Ryan cut the lead in half as they doubled up Minnesota shots. Lindholm and Aho set up two third period goals, the second with only 94 seconds left in the game to give the Canes a 4-3 advantage. Carolina outshot the Wild 41-23 at that stage, very deserving of the lead and win. Minnesota decided to show a little effort in the final 7 seconds and after a mad scramble CapFinn Koivu poked a game tying goal with only .1 seconds on the clock. Only decent OT opportunity was a 2 on 0 chance for Minnesota that resulted in a flubbed pass. Wild doin Wild things. Canes take it.
Fantasy spin- Eight different scorers, no one really cashing in. A goalie win is worth 5pts and Darling only score 5.6 for Chris. Eric Staal, Jason Zucker, Sebastian Aho, Elias Lindholm, and Viktor Rask all had two points, but none of them put up more than 7 fantasy points. Jaccob Slavin received a much heavier workload than last year and seems like he could carry some fantasy value this season for Josh.
GM 24 Dallas Stars (0-1-0) @ St Louis Blues (1-0-0)
This one started as a tight checking affair before Carl Gunnarsson banked a shot in off of a Dallas d-man from behind the net. Soon after, Joel Edmundson smoked a much higher quality shot by Lehtenon. Later in the first were two grade A chances. First, Jaden Schwartz undressed Lehtenon to make it a 3-0 lead and then Jake Allen stoned captain Jamie Benn on the backdoor to secure a 3-0 lead. Dallas wouldn't break Allen's shutout until early in the third with a Klingberg shot through traffic on the PP. A Ritchie cross-check stunted the Dallas surge and a Tarasenko PP snipe ended any comeback. 4-2 Blues.
Fantasy spin- Tarasenko/Schenn provided me with 9 points. Schwartz got Austin 5 pts as his team's mascot to go along with Allen's 10.6 win.
FANTASY STAT OF THE DAY Luckily you can only start 2 goalies, but Austin (#1 team of the week) started Schneider and Allen, two wins for 22.6pts. His two bench goalies (Markstrom and Halak) also won. He had 4 goalie wins on the night! Too bad he could only score two of them. The only free agent that seems to have value may be Devin Shore. Back to back games logging several minutes on the powerplay with the big boys. I may jump on that since I have Seguin, who was shut down by Allen.
GM 25 Columbus Blue Jackets (1-0-0) @ Chicago Blackhawks (1-0-0)
Chicago's offense picked things up right where their 10 goal debut left off with Patrick Kane scoring on his first shift, first shot. Bobs was not in net for the BJ's and is easily their best player. Perhaps it would have been a more competitive game with him in net, but Hawks continue to dominate. Brandon Saad cleaned up his own tip on the powerplay to go up 2-0. Sonny Milano sweeped in a fluke goal after captain Toews ripped one by the swiss cheese known as Joonas Korpisalo. No damage done as Hawks went on to win 5-1. Kane was making Kane passes as he gifted d-man Jan Ruutu his first NHL goal. And ex-Hawk Artemi Panarin logged the most t.o.i for the jackets, but only registered two shots- no points.
Fantasy spin- Kevin received another 1 goal win, 10.4 performance by Crawford in net. 20 points through two starts is very solid. His three Hawk starters (Kane, Hartman, Keith) also brought in 8 pts for him. Sonny Milano has looked pretty good for the depleted free agency. Jonathan Toews has been getting roasted by many Hawk fans for lack of production, but he snagged Jon 6 points in this one.
GM 26 Vegas Golden Knights (1-0-0) @ Arizona Coyotes (0-1-0)
Vegas was held off of the scoreboard for the first 40 minutes for consecutive nights. Vegas was outplayed in Dallas, but stole one off of Fleury's stellar play and Neal's late game heroics. Tonight, different story. Vegas dominated the pace. They won 61% of the faceoffs and held a steady shot advantage all game long. Fleury's only blemish came in the first when Tobias Rieder scored. With less than two minutes left in the game the Golden Knights were shaking their head at the scoreboard as they held a 40-27 shot advantage, but could not figure Antti Raanta out in his strong debut for Arizona. After pulling Fleury the pressure intensified and eventually Nate Schmidt, a d-man Vegas is extremely high on, punched home a rebound. James Neal smoked Raanta in OT and whaaaat is going on in Vegas! They looked strong tonight, but after sending Pickard to Toronto, who is their backup goalie? Marc Andre Fleury is undoubtly a hall of fame goaltender. He seems to thrive under pressure and looks like a young Fleury that would steal games for a young, struggling Penguins. But he can't play 82 games.
Fantasy spin- Vegas Knights beat me in fantasy this week. After losing a head to head goalie matchup Saturday to Ray, I had Raanta in net against another Fleury start. And I'll admit when that rebound came to Schmidt and yelled and threw my controller in sync with the puck beating Raanta. he still gave me 7 points, but losing was a 10 point swing in my matchup. Fleury with 9.4. Nate Schmidt was the leading scorer with 7.5 for the free agency, but Chris snatched him up.
GM 27 Edmonton Oilers (1-0-0) @ Vancouver Canucks
"Vancouver may have the toughest job in all of the NHL, stopping Connor McDavid." Job done. Markstrom started off his 2017-2018 campaign by letting the first shot on goal by him, off of Kris Russell's stick. Bo Horvat powered around Benning and snuck a PP shot by Cam Talbot. Russell and Klefbom had a beautiful set up to give opponent Brandon Sutter an easy goal and Vancouver the lead. Horvat wrapped a goal around thirty seconds into the second to go up 3-1. It was a hilariously poor shot. And Cam Talbot was pulled as a result. 3-1 isn't the most common time to pull a goalie, but Talbot only had 4 saves. He gave away the game, but credit to backup Laurent Brossoit as he stepped up and shut down all 19 shots he faced including Vancouver's three best chances, one on the powerplay and two breakaways. The second breakaway came in the third after Ryan Nugent-Hopkins finished off a sexy PP set up. The Oilers were back on the PP and pressing. McDavid made a horrible pass that sent Markus Granlund off on a breakaway that Brossoit shut down. It looked like the Oilers would tie it up, but Markstrom came through stopping 33-35 shots. Turns out Milan Lucic's late hits and tantrums were not enough to tie the game up.
Fantasy spin- McDavid was on the ice for almost 25 minutes which is an absurd amount of time to only record two shots on goal. If he is going to score 100 goals this year like I'm hearin- should probably shoot more. Lucic had one assist and no penalty minutes. Don't worry though, Ryan, Lucic is sure to provide a ton of PIM points this year. Horvat had a strong season 20g, 52p season. On a struggling Canucks team he was the bright spot last year, but he did end the year with a 17 goal draught. I remember as he helped me get stomped in the playoffs. His two goals gave Michael 7 more pts. With the Sedins down below 15 minutes of play and the addition of Thomas Vanek- it's hard to tell who will join Horvat in trying to weave through the retirement home of a roster.
GM 28 Philadelphia Flyers (1-1-0) @ Anaheim Ducks (1-0-0)
Feb. 2008 was the last time the Flyers won a game in regulation against the Ducks as Anaheim rode a 11-0-2 series streak into this game. Flyers dominated play out of the gates, but John Gibson was putting together a highlight reel- robbing 3-4 Flyer goals. Rookie Nolan Patrick finally tallied his first point as he set up Provorov on the PP to finally puncture Gibson. Later in the first six guys battled along the board for the puck, but when Kase came away with it he was able to shuffle a pass across the ice to the lone skater on that side, Antoine Vermette and he tapped it home. The lone second period goal came from Sean Couturier as he scored his first of the season on his 10th shot of the year. Flyers dominating play continued and it looked like they would end the Ducks series streak, but Giroux juggled the puck along the blue line on the powerplay and Cam Fowler jumped him, picked his pocket, and fired home a shorthanded slapper to tie the game. John Gibson remained fantastic in net and stole the Ducks a point. Only a point though as Wayne Simmonds notched his fourth of the year early in OT.
Fantasy spin- Though he lost, John Gibson had another strong performance for Ryan, scoring 4.8 (2.6 less than the winning goalie, Brian Elliott). Patrick got his first point of the year for Jon, but the rookie has yet to see a lot of ice time. Jon does have Ivan Provorov who scored another 5.5pts and has looked like the Flyers best d-man this year. He is beginning to grow into the hype that has surrounded him. Anaheim is going to continue to struggle until they receive 5 of their top end skaters back from the IR. Life should get easier for Gibson once Vatanen and Lindholm return.
GM 29 Winnipeg Jets (0-1-0) @ Calgary Flames (0-1-0)
Bandon Tanev opened the scoring on a shorthanded breakaway off of a stupid Versteeg pass. Versteeg did contribute on a goal later on that same powerplay. Later in the first Wheeler set up Sheifele to convert a crisp PPG. Laine followed up shortly after with his first goal of the season, batting in a rebound off the post. Aaaand that was it for Winnipeg. Calgary went on to embarrass the Jets with 5 unanswered goals largely led by Johnny Gaudreau in a big bounceback effort by him and T.J Brodie.
Fantasy spin- Steve Mason has been horrible this season, I suggest Ross change his team name from Stone Mason to Stoned Mason. Two starts and still negative points on the season. Johnny Gaudreau and T.J Brodie came up huge in fantasy, each with 4 point nights. Gaudreau's 1g 3a brought Jon 11 pts and Brodie's 2g 2a scored Reece 12 points. Also with a decent outing was Kris Versteeg giving the league's worst team, Jake, 6 pts. Calgary's blue line looks promising in the fantasy world as they fired 13 shots on goal.
GM 30 Los Angeles Kings (1-0-0) @ San Jose Sharks (0-1-0)
The Sharks scored on their second shot of the game to tie it up 1-1 midway through the first, but Los Angeles dominated the game in every way. This is back to back great performances by the Kings, especially defensively. The Sharks seemed to still be in pre-season mode because they have not looked good. I hear they have a lot of offensive weapons, but I don't see them. Brent Burns... 27 minutes of ice time and a -4 rating in their 4-1 loss. He has to be better or it's going to be a long season. Aaron Dell did not let in any goals after relieving Matin Jones, so there's that.
Fantasy spin- Anze Kopitar was the best skater on the ice two night. His 2 assist, 1 goal effort scored Michael 8.5. Jonathan Quick appears to be in good form as he has proven to be one of the best goalies in the world when he is on his game. 8.8pts for Mitch from Quick and Mitch ends the first matchup with a goalie record of 4-0 from Quick and Howard. Brent Burns was the #1 dman taken by Jon, but has not been good so far.

GM 31 Montreal Canadiens (1-1-0) @ New York Rangers (0-2-0)
Lundqvist looked like Swiss cheese again as he let in two goals in the first period. Evidently the league was tired of his mediocrity so they called off both goals. After given a 3rd chance at a shutout- he took care of business. Brady Skjei threw a pass out front and it deflected of a Hab and into the net. Later in the game Zibanejad continued his tear with his 4th goal of the season from a horrible angle. Rangers win 2-0, but both teams are now 1-2-0 and should be feeling pretty unsatisfied with their start. Henrik Lundqvist's 62nd shutout is 2nd among active goalies. Luongo with 73.
Fantasy spin- Chris finally received positive points from Lundqvist with 14.6pt shutout. Kevin Shattenkirk used the third game to place himself as the top dman of the week ending with 14.5pts on the week for Michael. Chris also named his team after the dman who scored the first goal, Brady Skjei. Since, he no longer owns John Carlson. Nothing going if you had Habs players in the lineup.

Austin's forwards were absolutely dominant this week and he did not have to rely on one player. 7 guys put up 9 or more points this week highlighted by Crosby (18), Voracek (11.5), Russell (10.5). Dave's team played well considering his goalies went 1-2-2. He just happened to run into the hottest team in the league this week. Dmen usually are irrelevant but Austin's posted more than 40 points this abbreviated week which is impressive. Crosby had a quiet 18 points and Allen had two strong wins.

When your leading skater is Scott Fartsmell and 75% of his points are due to penalties- not going to be the hottest of weeks. Ryan's goalie tandem of John Gibson and Tuuka Rask looked strong, but wasn't enough to slow Kevin down this week. Kevin's goalie tandem doubled up Jagr Bomb's points, 36-18.2 with Crawford and Freddie Andersen going 4-0-0. 32.5 more of Kevin's points were acquired by his Chicago Blackhawks and as long as the hawks stay hot, Kevin likely will too.

This matchup developed into the most interesting one of the week as Mitch wins the most screwed over award in the opening week. Michael and rode Ghost-Bear and the Flyers to a dominating lead 44-11 on opening night, but Dat syuk It chipped away. 41-34 on Thursday, 8-0 Friday, 65-57 Saturday, and 3-1 Sunday. Mitch won 4 of the 5 days in this matchup, but Michael's stellar opening night held up for the win. It was skaters v. goalies as Mitch had a 30 point advantage in goaltending, but with 5 skaters in double digits led by Wayne Simmonds, Michael held on for the best win of the early season.

Misjudged this matchup thinking DiPietro would win, but Ross held a consistent lead as he won every single day. He ended with negative points from Steve Mason (needs to change his team name to Stoned Mason) and Joonas Korpisalo, but he had something no other team had this week- No 0's. Every single skater contributed to this easy victory. As for Calista- no one showed up. Her goalies put up 1.4pts on the week and she only had 2 skaters to reach double digits, Leafs Matthews and Komarov.

Pavelec not getting the nod on Sunday sealed the victory for McFleury this week. Alex Ovechkin's 7 goals over two games and Marc Andre Fleury's 2-0-0 start fueled Ray's team with 55 points. The Fleury wins were massive as both victories came against goalies on Seguin Genesis. Fleury 22 points in two games and Seguin Genesis with 15 points with four goalie starts. I'm a little salty with the outcome, but the season goes on. Circling the 2nd matchup against him.

Jon had a good opening night, jumping up 16-6, but that was the only day he won as Reece just edged him out each of the last four days of the matchup. Saad, Zuccarello, and T.J Brodie led the charge for Reece as they combined for 49.5 points. What killed Jon is his goalies racking up a pathetic -2.2 points on the week. Hard to win when your goalies are off doing that.

Eakin Disorder 84.9
Not drafting a goalie didn't burn Eakin Disorder yet as the addition of Semyon Varlamov, the lone starter to not be drafted, paid off for the game he started. Josh's forwards out did Sunnyvale Samsquances by 11 points, but Todd's two goalies came in clutch. Braden Holtby and Brian Elliott combined for a 4-0-0 record and posted 33.8pts.

The defending champ got off to a slow start this week, but flashed the two rings to get the league's easiest opponent. This game went into Saturday almost tied, but Chris cracked it open with two goalie wins and iced the game Sunday with a shutout from Lundqvist who looked like Swiss cheese all week until Sunday.
